Mobilizing and compressive clothing: essential support for living with lymphedema
What is a mobilizing and compressive garment?
Mobilizing and compressive garments are textile medical devices designed to support the management of lymphedema and post-traumatic or post-operative edema. They combine two complementary actions: homogeneous compression that limits the accumulation of liquid and gentle mobilization of the tissues thanks to a specific structure integrated into the textile.
The Mobiderm range is based on this principle. The clothes are made of foam pads, there are 2 sizes to adapt to the different locations of the edema. These small studs exert differentiated pressure on the skin and thus create a micromobilising effect with each movement. This mechanical stimulation promotes lymph circulation and helps to gradually decongest edematous areas.
Why use mobilizing and compressive clothing?
Lymphedema is a chronic pathology characterized by an accumulation of lymph in the tissues, sometimes causing significant swelling of a limb, most often the arm or leg. This condition can be congenital or appear after medical treatment, for example following surgery or radiotherapy in the context of breast cancer.
Mobilizing and compressive clothing provides an effective response to this problem. By reducing edema, they improve mobility, reduce pain and the feeling of heaviness and make it easier to carry out everyday gestures. They also play a preventive role by limiting the worsening of symptoms and helping to maintain the results obtained after manual lymphatic drainage sessions.
The benefits of Mobiderm technology
The specificity of Mobiderm lies in its ability to combine compression and tissue mobilization. The studs create differentiated pressure zones that promote the sliding of the lymph towards the drainage areas that are still functional. This effect is enhanced by the patient's movements, whether walking or daily activities.
In practice, this results in a gradual reduction in the volume of the limb, an improvement in the flexibility of the tissues and a reduction in painful sensations. These garments also offer comfort of use, as they are designed to be worn easily in everyday life, without major discomfort.
How to use mobilizing and compressive clothing?
The use of compression and mobilizing garments should be integrated into an overall lymphedema treatment protocol. They are usually worn after an intensive phase of decongestion carried out by a health professional. Their role is then to maintain and extend the results in the maintenance phase.
The duration of wear varies depending on the case, but they are often used for several hours a day, sometimes in combination with adapted physical exercises or physiotherapy sessions. The support of a health professional is essential to determine the most suitable model and to ensure that compression is well tolerated by the patient.
Maintenance and durability
Like any medical textile device, mobilizing and compressive garments must be maintained regularly in order to maintain their effectiveness. Daily washing at low temperatures, by hand or in the machine, is recommended. Drying should be done in the open air, away from direct heat sources. Clothing should be replaced as soon as it loses its elasticity or compressive capacity, usually every six months or so.
