Minerva: when and why to wear it?
What is a cervical neck brace?
The cervical collar, often called a "neck brace", is a medical device designed to support the neck and limit head movement. Its role is both preventive and therapeutic: it helps to stabilize the cervical spine, reduce mechanical stress on the muscles and vertebrae and, thus, relieve pain. Depending on the model, it can offer a flexible support, suitable for mild and temporary pain, or a rigid support, used in post-traumatic or post-surgical contexts.
In practice, the cervical collar is prescribed by a health professional after an accident, a sprain, an operation or in the context of chronic neck pain.
When to use a cervical collar?
Wearing a cervical collar can be indicated in several situations. It is first prescribed after a cervical trauma, such as whiplash in a car accident or a sprain, to protect the vertebrae and limit sudden movements that could aggravate the injury.
Semi-rigid (C3) and rigid (C4) collars are used after certain cervical spine surgeries . In this case, the collar keeps the neck in a secure position while healing and bone consolidation.
Finally, the cervical collar can also be indicated in the context of chronic pain, such as neck pain related to poor posture, osteoarthritis or muscle fatigue. In these cases, it is worn punctually, to reduce tension and provide temporary relief.
How long can you wear a neck brace?
Wearing a cervical collar must remain limited in time. In general, it is a few hours a day or a duration ranging from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the medical indication. Prolonged wear is not recommended, as it can lead to a decrease in neck muscle tone and therefore slow down long-term recovery.
On the other hand, in the case of heavier traumas, the C4 type cervical collar (rigid) can be worn continuously for several weeks to ensure proper immobilization. The removal of the collar must be carried out under medical supervision, often after imaging examinations confirming spinal stability
It is essential to follow the doctor's recommendations, who adjust the duration according to the pathology, the intensity of the pain and the overall treatment plan (physiotherapy, rehabilitation, exercises).
Can you sleep with a cervical collar?
In general, it is not advisable to sleep with a cervical collar unless strictly medically indicated, for example after surgery or severe trauma. Nighttime rest is normally done without an orthosis, in order to avoid stiffness, discomfort and circulatory problems. On the other hand, for C4 (rigid) type models, night-time wear is generally recommended to maintain cervical stability even during sleep, unless otherwise advised by the attending physician.
What are the risks of using a neck brace?
If the cervical collar is misused or worn for too long, it can cause several side effects. The decrease in muscle activity is the main risk: by maintaining the neck effortlessly, it leads to a gradual wasting of the cervical muscles. This can accentuate joint stiffness and slow down functional recovery.
Overtightening can also impede breathing, swallowing, or blood flow. Finally, prolonged wear without medical supervision can make it more difficult to resume movement. This is why the use of a cervical collar should always be limited and supervised by a health professional.
How to properly put on and adjust a neck brace?
To be effective, the cervical collar must be correctly positioned and be the right size. The chin should rest comfortably on the upper part provided for this purpose, while the neck should be supported without excessive compression. The tightening should be sufficient to provide stability, but never so much as to interfere with breathing or swallowing.
An improper fit can reduce the effectiveness of the device, or even increase discomfort. For this reason, it is often recommended to make the first adjustment with the help of a healthcare professional.
Maintenance and durability
Most cervical collars are equipped with a removable textile cover, machine washable at 30 °C on a gentle cycle. It is advisable to avoid the tumble dryer and aggressive products that could alter the materials. Drying should be done in the open air, away from direct heat sources. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure hygiene and extend the life of the device.
