External breast prostheses: role, use and advice
What is an external breast prosthesis?
The external breast prosthesis is a medical device designed to restore the natural curve of the breast after a partial or total mastectomy. It is worn in a suitable bra, equipped with pockets, and compensates for the loss of volume of the breast.
Unlike the surgical breast implant, the external prosthesis is non-invasive : it fits directly on the skin or in the textile, and can be removed at any time. It is a comfortable and reversible solution, often offered while waiting for surgical reconstruction or as a sustainable alternative for women who do not want surgery.
When should a breast prosthesis be used?
The breast prosthesis is generally prescribed after:
a total mastectomy, to compensate for the complete loss of a breast,
a partial mastectomy (also called conservative surgery), when the breast has been partially removed
a deferred reconstruction, as a temporary solution before the operation,
or as a personal choice, for those who do not wish to have reconstructive surgery.
Beyond aesthetics, the prosthesis also plays a functional role. It restores postural balance, by correctly distributing the weight of the chest, and helps to limit back pain or body imbalances that may appear after a mastectomy.
How to choose your breast prosthesis?
The choice depends on several criteria:
The post-operative stage : often prescribed immediately after the operation or if the operation is less than 2 months old, and/or if healing is underway and/or if the skin is weakened during radiotherapy.
Morphology : there are different shapes and sizes to adapt to the silhouette and curve of the remaining breast.
Lifestyle : some prostheses are designed specifically for sports or swimming, with resistant materials and optimized support.
Personal comfort : the weight, texture and shape are chosen according to the desired sensations.
A fitting accompanied by a specialized health professional is often necessary to find the most suitable model.
How to use and maintain an external breast prosthesis?
The breast prosthesis is worn in a post-mastectomy bra with inner pockets, specially designed to hold the device in place stably and comfortably.
Maintenance is simple: textile prostheses can be washed in the washing machine at low temperatures, while silicone prostheses should be cleaned daily in warm water with mild soap and then gently dried in the open air. To preserve their durability, it is recommended to avoid heat sources and abrasive products.
The benefits of breast implants
Beyond their functional and aesthetic role, external breast implants play an essential role in psychological well-being. They allow women to regain a harmonious figure, improve their clothing comfort and, above all, strengthen their self-confidence in everyday life.
They also offer a flexible solution: unlike surgical reconstruction, they do not require surgery and can be adapted or replaced as needs change.
